Kudos

Tomorrow marks Chelsea's graduation from college with a degree in nursing. Congrats!!!

The girls is AMAZING and an INSPIRATION to me. Even though I'm the OLDER sister, I'm constantly admiring and looking up to her.

1. she's an amazing mom. she's not just an ordinary single mom, she's an extraordinary one-of-a kind mom. her whole life is devoted to being a mom to little avery and she's the luckiest girl i know to have chels as a mom. seriously.

2. as if being a single parent mom isn't enough, she's found time to balance her life, juggling working full-time (to save for school) and then going to school full-time. i know many moms who talk about going back to school after they have kids, but who many of them do you actually know how do it? even putting money and time aside.

3. she's overcome many obstacles - but yet is more focused and driven than anyone else i know. she knows what she wants and won't settle for anything else.

4. she's also my best friend. there is no one else who can understand me after a hard, long day or make me laugh endlessly for no reason at all.

5. I'm not the only one who thinks so. her teachers totally agree. read for yourself.

but there is one thing missing. anyone know any suitable single guys? but i'm warning you - i have to screen them first and they better be up to par. as my dad once put it, if they hurt her - he will kill you.

Mother's Day

And Tanner gave me the best gift I could ever ask for - he only made me wait over 10 months for it!

For the first time ever - he slept through the night - completely and entirely on his own - until 7 on the morning.

Oh Tanner - how I love you!

PS - Now if someone would have told me when he was born that it would be 10 months before I would get a full 8 hours worth of sleep - uninterupted - I probably would have had a complete and total breakdown. But it's amazingly what you learn to get use to.

New set of wheels

Yes, I fianlly decided to buy a new bike. I've been wanting to get a bike ever since we got married and lived in an apartment that backed up to White Rock Lake. The lake is gorgeous and serene, although it's not far from downtown Dallas. The best part is that is has 10-15 miles trails that wrap around it.
We still live within a few miles of the lake, but I've just forgotten about it. I got in the habit of going to the gym to workout...at least until I got pregnant and had Tanner. Now I want something we can do together as a family. Anthony already got a new bike last fall.

Then I wasn't sure if it was worth speding the money on a new bike, but once I found a great deal, the decision was easy. Who can say no to this? Not only was it on sale for 40% off, but then my firm reimburses 50% as part of health & fitness initiative and the store was offering add'l 20% "rebate."
And I seriosuly love, love the bike. Anthony looked over all the specs, but I just love how it looks and rides. It's still a road bike, but the handlebars are different (which the pic doesn't show).

Riding a bike just makes me feel like a kid again. I love the feeling of having the wind brush against your face and even as a kid, it never really has felt like "exercise" to me.
Once I get good, I will start toting Tanner around the trails with me. Or convince my hardcore friends to come with me.

I am NOT a GIRL!

For the first time in his life, someone thought Tanner was a girl.

This past weekend we went to the Arboretum to enjoy the beautiful weather and take some pics of Tanner.

Does he look like a girl? I mean seriously. I understand it's a gender neutral outfit, but he has BOY written all over his face. At least I think so...
Well - this old lady comes up to me and starts admiring Tanner - and then tells me she can't tell if it's a boy or a girl...and then guesses a girl. WRONG!

I was hoping that would be the first and the last...but then a few minutes later another family walks by. When the young boy comments on how cute the little baby boy is, the mother corrects him and tells him it's a girl. WRONG!

Ugh. I've come to grips that Tanner has a pretty boy face. However, Tanner's hopes of becoming a model have been squashed.

Just look at his poses. Some how sticking out his tongue just ruins the whole thing.

Or not looking at the camera.

And refusing to smile.

Or take the fingers out of his mouth.

But this time, it wasn't your fault. Why did the fly have to land right on top of your head - of all places!

But it's okay, I still love him for it. I learned by lesson. Don't try to take pics when he's tired. He fell asleep as soon as we put him in the car seat. And after all that work...this is still my favorite pic.

PS - And we managed to get one pic of just the two of us!

Shout out to Ken Dog!

Per special request, this one is for you.

Meriam found some "lava rocks" in the backyard and it reminded her of your story climbing Mt. Fuji. She insisted I take a few pics and send them your way.
Not sure which picture is better. It was all her idea - and I think it's great!!!

Deep Thoughts

I would pay a million dollars to know what he is thinking. Any guesses?

I like to think he's pondering upon the eternaties and leaving the worldly cares behind him. I love the pure innocence of children and am constantly amazed at how much they teach us...of love, patience, passion, and most importantly - laughter. Now I keep saying how obsessively cute Tanner is, but it's not just him. Every little kid I meet has the same impact on me. I love how the scriptures teach to "becometh as a child - submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit." Think of the impact it would have on the world's issues - terrorism, piracy, poverty, war, economic uncertainty - if people heeded this simple council.

I just love this little guy. For all that he has taught me.

Tanner loves to sit and gaze upon the world from our back patio. It never seizes to amaze me how the simple pleasure of standing up can make him feel like he's on top of the world. When he's feeling courageous, he'll even let go and stand on his own for 5-10 seconds, and then grab back on.

Or face plant his face against the glass.

Tannerisms

There's no other way to describe all the things he does...

  1. Laughing when we pour water on his face in the bathtub.

  2. Licking his high chair plate when he's evidently still hungry or can't seem to get it fast enough with his fingers.

  3. Smiling with every ounce of engery humanly possible. In case you missed this video, here is it again. I LOVE IT!!!

  4. Waving to complete strangers, cars, etc as they're passing when he's on a walk. And if his hand is busy (such as he's sucking on his fingers), he'll wave with his elbow.

  5. Finding a secret hiding spot for his pacifier. In one day, they all seemed to disapper and we couldn't understand. I figured they had to be hiding somewhere. After looking everywhere and a few phonecalls, alas, they were found. Neatly piled together in a stach behind his crib. Case of the missing pacifiers solved. When he's done with it, he tosses it over the edge. Should I take this as a cue he no longer needs it?

  6. Swinging in the backyard. When Tanner goes outside to play, it must be followed by a trip to the swing. If not, he'll look at you, look at the swing, then look at you again - and then give you - the look. He loves to swing! And if you take him out before he's done, he'll let you know he wasn't done swinging.

  7. Hamming it up. When he wants to be "extra" cute, he'll tilt his head to the side and smile. Just like this:

  8. Or not so cute. Seriously, there's no stopping him. No matter what we try to do, his absolute favorite thing to do it to pull the DVDs off the bookshelf. It's time to find a new spot.

  9. Eating his words, quite literally. He loves these cards. One day, with a card in tow, he kept repeating the same thing - he'd roll over, look up at the card, and then keep repeating it. The card went with him all over the room.

  10. Emptying the water in the bathtub and then trying to climb out. Really!

Take me out to the ball game!

Tanner experienced his first baseball game (and hopefully followed by many more)! And from the expression on his face...he definitely liked it.

He was so excited with anticipation that he was singing on the car ride there.

And riding on Daddy's shoulders brough a whole new dimension of feeling on top of the world.

We met up with some friends from Dental School - Austin & Megan and Cassidy & Tyler - along with Chels & Avery.

Avery soon wanted a turn riding on Anthony's shoulder's as well.

Chelsea took Tanner - and a moment later - he was cuddling with her. I mean, he never cuddles with me unless he's really tired and about to fall asleep. And look at how cute they are together, but I'm not jealous or anything!

Can you see how excited Avery and Tanner were before the game?

But that quickly changed.
We had a great time...including all the kids. We purposefully got the cheapest tickets possible so the kids could play around - or their favorite - watch the Six Flads rollcoasters in the background.
I had to hold onto the railing and have Anthony hold Tanner as we were walking up to our seats - it was so so high up there.

Tanner preferred to have his own seat, just like the other big kids.

And to think we almost left Tanners at home with a babysitter...

One more month...

Tanner is now 10 months old. And here's my recap of the past month. Yes, it's a pathetic mom's attempt to remember every little detail. YES, I am obsessed with Tanner. But I can't help myself.

Sick as a dog.

One long month of drudgery. Ear infection in both ears. Strep throat. Yeast Infection. High Fever followed by a rash all over his body - most likely Roselo. Hence, many long, sleepness nights, OD on children's Tylenol, and 3 trips to the doctor followed by many more phone calls. But he FINALLY is all better. However, what took me 8 months to get Tanner to sleep through the night was quickly unwound in just a few days of illness...so we're starting all over...and hoping it goes MUCH quicker the second time around.

And while Anthony and I have had our own fair share of sickness, one look at this bright eyed, open face smile can do wonders for the soul. There's no other feeling quite like it.

Tanner staying up late with Dad. Really, he just wanted to watch the Mavs beat the Spurs in the playoffs.

On top of the world.

Now that Tanner has mastered crawling, he's on to the next stage - standing. He's constantly pulling himself onto anything and everything. And the simplest task brings an exquisite joy. The victory is over and Tanner has conquered. The look on his face afterwards is as if he climbed Mt Everest.

Couches. Crib. Bookshelfs. Windows. Chairs. Bathtub.
(ps - tanner acts as if he's a captain at sea commanding a ship)
And humans.

Unfortunately, he's still learning - allbeit the hard way -that not everything works so well. Like the fireplace screen is for decoration purposes only and cannot support a 22 lb Tanner. He got the message when it came tumbling down on him. Needless to say, we apparently need to start childproofing.

And lately, he'll let go and stand for 10-15 secs, then grab back on. Or when he's near me, he'll let himself fall so I catch him. And then laughs hysterically and thinks its so much fun. But when day he'll do it when I'm no there - and it won't be so funny.

New tricks.

After just one or two tries, Tanner learned how to raise his arms when I ask "how big are you" and respond "so big". He also claps his hands together. Anytime he's excited, happy, or just wants to be cute.

He also will do it when you sing "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands" or "Do as I'm doing."

Grooves to the music. He dances along with the peep - bopping music. This video doesn't do justice...but it's a glimpse.

And waves. But that's old news. Anthony has also been teaching him to raise one hand up in the air - like superman when he flies - and say "power to the people." Don't ask questions.

Sleepovers.

Avery has spent the night which Chelsea was doing her 3rd shift clinicals for school. At first, Avery hadn't warmed up to Tanner. On the other hand, Tanner was quite obessive over her and was insistent on her attention. He would follow her around and Avery would complain "I don't want him to come get me" or "he's hurting me" anytime Tanner layed a finger on her.

It really was quite amusing...but Tanner found a way into her heart. By the end of the day, she was telling me, "I don't want Tanner to take a nap" and loved making him smile and giggle - and she's really good at it. She also helped feed him, change him, bath him, etc. She kept asking - who sleeps with Tanner - and was very concerned that he sleeps in the crib by himself all night long. The best part, when we were gettin ready for church, she entertained him while I got ready. And while we were getting our church bag together, she made sure she got toys and snacks together too. Whatever she did, Tanner had to do also.

I always thought juggling two kids would be completely overwhelming...but I'm starting to see the light at the other end of the tunnel.

Food. Food. And more Food.

Tanner loves food. I think he get's it from me. For dinner, I'm constantly surprised at how much food he can back in. For example, one night we went out to eat. Beforehand, I nursed him and fed him a serving of veggies. While we are at the restaurant, he ate a few slices of bread and kept insisting on more and more pasta. The kid can pack it in. Especially if it involves feeding himself. His attention spans dwindles when I'm feeding him with a spoon, but if he can feed himself, he has no limit.

As another side note, I had packed some baby puffs in the bag especially for him, but the seemed to miraclously disappear on the way to the restaurant. Avery seemed to find my secret stash, but of course had no comment. Have you ever tasted one of those puffs - they're weird and gross. But the girl is obsessed with them.

He eats like a king. I make homemade baby food from fresh fruit and veggies. His favorite - besides yogurt - has expanded to pancakes, black beans, cottage cheese, canteloupe, pineapple, mangos, strawberries, and pasta. And he still eats his veggies - sweet potatoes, brocoli, green beans, zucchini. So far, the only thing I found that he doesn't like so much - baby nutrigrain bars. He just had a bite, made a weird face, and didn't want anything to do with it afterwards.

What I love most.

I always thought that once he started crawling, I'd have to complete with the world for his attention. But it's quite the opposite. He still can't get enough of me and makes it clear that I'm the center of his world. For example, one morning Anthony got up early to let me sleep in a little longer. When I awoke, they were playing together in the family room. As soon as the little man saw me, he started "sprinting" towards me. It wasn't easy - Anthony was blocking him. But he climbed over him and flipped himself over - and then just kept right on crawling until he got to me.

Determination. But it was oh so worth it for a sweet embrace!
